FAT-ATTACK BEACH RIDE 2019

The Rugbytots beach ride raising money for the Springbok’s official charity – The Players’ Fund.

On the 30th November 2019, a group of 22 adventure-seeking Rugbytots friends and family launched onto their ‘Fat-Bikes’ where we spent two memorable days of riding along the pristine beaches of the Southernmost tip of South Africa.

This journey alongside like-minded people will not only be a break away from the daily grind, but it will be raising awareness and money for the VICTORIOUS Springbok’s chosen charity – the Chris Burger Petro Jackson Players’ Fund.

Day 1

The Rugbytots bike team all met bright and early at the Arniston Hotel, just 200km drive from Cape Town – which was our starting point. After small chat and coffee, the team was formally welcomed by Max Webb – Rugbytots founder and Steed Richardson Rugbytots SA director. Taking a quick trip to the starting point at Die Dam caravan park they kitted up and were introduced to the fat bikes that carried them on the unique team building journey over the next two days.

Day 1 was a mixture of hardpack beach riding, exclusive inland single tracks through protected fynbos and plenty of opportunities to stop and take in all the beauty that the L’ Agulhas coastline has to offer. Day 1 finishes off with a sighting of the HMS Birkenhead, one of 140 shipwrecks that litter the Southern Most coastline. A quick photo stops at the ever-popular Southern Most point before its full steam ahead to the accommodation in Struis-Baai. Distance for the day – 42km

Day 2

As we made our way back to the beautiful Arniston Hotel, we were lucky enough to enjoy a pleasant tailwind for the trip home, 28kms of the purest longest stretch of unbroken beach line along with Southern Africa.

This part of the ride was referred to as a “beach safari”.

The wildlife ranged from whales, seals, crabs and an abundance of protected bird species. We were truly blessed to be apart of this beauty and seeing this coastline with our own eyes is something that only a few people will get to experience. Distance for that day – 32km
